Many of us are raising our children abroad and wondering whether we should teach them Persian and, if so, how to go about it. Raising my daughter abroad, I deeply desired for her to learn Persian. Persian is her heritage language, spoken by generations in our family. It’s a language through which the stories, values, and wisdom of the Persians are conveyed. By embracing it, she could discover more about her past and pass down the rich heritage to future generations.
Learning Persian abroad is challenging. We are too busy to speak to our children in Persian. We may not be confident in our Persian language abilities. Nannies and tutors are not always accessible. As a nonmainstream language, few age-relevant Persian language learning resources are available for children. The books published in Iran are not designed for children living abroad. Most online videos are outdated or do not teach the language to build vocabulary and grammar. We know that language learning becomes harder as our children grow up.
Hippo Learns Persian was created to address these issues. The content is developed by qualified linguists who specialize in helping children learn a second language, notably one that may be spoken at home but not in school and broader society. The app is based on important principles of language learning derived from research and practice. The content will engage and excite your children. It is interactive and age-appropriate. As children listen to stories, they absorb the new words and structures, and as they complete the language learning activities, they practice them. They have many opportunities to revisit and retrieve the vocabulary in other stories at the same or higher levels. Children will want to learn Persian! They will ask you to listen to more stories and do more activities. Starting with 15–20 minutes a day, your children will begin learning to speak, read, and write in Persian. Hippo takes your children on the journey of learning Persian and grows with them from preschool to primary school and beyond.
Try the app for free today! Content for children aged 3–5 is available on the App Store and Google Play. But that’s just the beginning; content for older children is already in progress. We will post regular updates and new content to meet children’s needs. Any child or adult interested in learning Persian can start with the content for children 3–5 years old. With your support, we will be able to develop further content and extend the love and resources for language learning to other nonmainstream languages.
Thank you!
